Tiger a twelve year old over weight boy and his Dad Brian joined Dr oz today. It was heart breaking looking at tiger while he shared his story with Dr Oz about how the kids teased him about being over weight. Tiger weighs 222 pounds and while at school kids would walk by him saying “your fat”. Tiger’s mom Marcia says he is a mini version of his dad, brian who has had trouble with his heart, and is afraid he is going down that same path. Brian ended up having a stent put in, because of a 75% blockage to his heart.

Tiger knows he needs to get healthy and lose weight, and he and his dad are basically eating buddies. They have both tried eating healthy, but end up sneaking away from mom and go eat chicken wings and every other unhealthy food they love to eat.

He told Dr Oz that he told his mom and dad that he needed their help, because he is unhealthy and afraid something bad might happen to him and he would die. Tiger said he knows he will always be the big kid, he just doesn’t want to be the over weight kid. Things have gotten so bad with the teasing that they pulled Tiger out of school.

Brian cried as he talked about his son’s battle with being over weight, and as their story progressed Tiger began to cry. He hopes to inspire other kids that over weight.

Brians waist was 52.5 inches, weight 293 pounds, A1C was 9 and it should be under 6, his glucose was 170, and it should be under 100.

Tiger’s waist was 40.5, his HDL cholesterol was 35, triglycerides were 188 should be less than 150, and his ALT was between 32-46, and should never be over 40.

For support when they go home Dr oz introduced them to Dr Linda Craighead and Dr Lisa Hark. They both showed them how to cut back on their portion sizes, and to cut the calories in half. Brian and Tiger love their BBQ pork, they can still have it sometimes but just not as much.

Dr Craighead taught them to eat when they are hungry and not wait until their starving because they will over eat, and to stop eating when they feel satisfied. Their meal of takeout BBQ and it clocked in at 1300 calories, 50 grams of fat, and 80 grams of sugar, which really concerned them because of pre diabetes and diabetes.

Dr Hark explained to Tiger he was eating triple the amount of food portions a child should be eating, and to try to avoid the fried foods when doing takeout.

Core Team Oz Eddie George joined the family onstage and is going to get brian and Tiger in shape for the fall.

5 foods to always avoid – unhealthy choices that can take years off your family’s lives

1. Simple Sugars or Carbs and Unhealthy Fats – foods laden with simple sugars, also called simple carbohydrates. Sugary breakfast cereals, donuts, pastries, cookies, ice cream, cakes and soda are loaded with them. These are called empty calories!

Select fiber-rich complex carbohydrates, including 100% whole grain bread, brown rice or steel-cut oats. Select whole foods such as fresh vegetables and lean meats.

2. Meats High in Nitrates and Saturated Fats – Processed meats such as cold cuts, bacon, sausages and hot dogs contain nitrates, they are full of unhealthy saturated fat that can raise levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol, a risk factor for heart disease and strokes.

Purchase meats low in saturated fats such as chicken and turkey or eat more fish, like salmon or tilapia, rich in healthy omega-3 fats.

3. Ingredients You Can’t Pronounce – Dr Oz says “if you can’t pronounce the first 5 ingredients, don’t let it near your cart.”

4. Fake Health Foods – Stay away from “low in fat”, like certain cookies, salad dressings or yogurt brands. Look closely at their labels. To make up for flavor, these items are inevitably high in sugar or salt.

Choose real foods as much as possible.

5. Canned Foods High in Sodium – Many canned foods are so full of salt, they contain half or more of your daily recommended intake. A diet high in sodium is dangerous since it can lead to high blood pressure.

To lower your overall sodium intake, try seasoning foods with more herbs, both dried and fresh.


Dr Oz Chocolate Avocado Mousse

Chef David Lieberman made a dessert today for Dr Oz with a secret ingredient which is very healthy and a substitute for butter. The secret ingredient was Avocado.

Chocolate Avocado Mousse Recipe

Ingredients
Serves 6
12 oz good-quality bittersweet chocolate, chopped
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp chili powder
1 large, ripe Hass avocado, pitted and peeled
3/4 cup light brown sugar
6 egg whites

Directions
Melt the chocolate with the cinnamon and chili powder in a double boiler over hot water and set aside. Puree the avocado and brown sugar in a food processor until smooth. With the machine running, pour in the chocolate mixture. Using a stand mixer or whisk, beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Fold the chocolate mixture into the egg whites. Pour the mousse into 6 small serving bowls or wineglasses and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or, covered, overnight.
